Martin Luther King Jr. Day Message

This year's Martin Luther King Jr. holiday offers a chance to reflect on and further the mission of the civil rights giant whose name graces our law school building.

In the spirit of community that fueled Dr. King’s life and work, UC Davis Law’s Black Law Students Association and 2023 MLK Day Working Group planned an amazing lineup for the MLK Day of Service and Celebration on Monday, Jan. 16. Highlights include a donation drive for Sacramento’s Malcolm X Academy and a keynote speech by Judge Trina Thompson of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

Volunteer opportunities continue Saturday, Jan. 21 with a naturalization workshop at the Sacramento Mexican Consulate held in conjunction with the Immigration Law Clinic and UC Immigrant Legal Services Center. (For more information, contact Professor Amagda Pérez).

At a law school that stands in tribute to the civil rights gains made by Dr. King, we must examine the systemic racism that tragically persists in our legal system and world at large. UC Davis Law’s Racial Justice Speaker Series, now in its third academic year, explores potential paths forward. The series resumes Feb. 1 with a virtual talk by UCLA Professor of History, African American Studies and Urban Planning Kelly Lytle Hernández based on her book Bad Mexicans: Race, Empire, and a Revolution in the Borderlands

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day and throughout the year, we strive to follow Dr. King’s extraordinarily courageous and brilliant example, our entire King Hall community joined in pursuit of justice for all.
