The King Hall Outreach Program: 2018 Winter Session

KHOPgroup

This past Saturday, January 27, UC Davis School of Law kicked off the Winter 2018 session of the King Hall Outreach Program (KHOP). The program provides information and training that helps first-generation college students and students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds improve their chances of being admitted to law school. We are proud to host the program and to have enrolled many KHOP graduates at King Hall over the years.

This year's KHOP class includes 21 students from UC Berkeley, UC Merced, UC Riverside, Sacramento State, San Francisco State, University of La Verne, and, of course, UC Davis. (In fact, 14 of the 21 are Aggies). I had lunch with the group on the first day of the program and enjoyed talking with them about law school, life as an attorney, and the law school application process.

KHOPlunch

Joe Schneider, Director of Admissions and Outreach, has arranged for a great program for KHOP students. Besides a classroom component, students will have lunch with King Hall Professors Madhavi Sunder (who is also Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs) and Raquel Aldana (also UC Davis Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Diversity). Professor Lisa Ikemoto will teach a mock law school class. Lance Martin ’13 of Kennaday Leavitt Owensby will be an alumni speaker. A number of current King Hall students (and KHOP alumni) including Paolo Hermoso ‘18, Kristina Munoz ‘19, Karen Pedraza ‘20, and Princepreet Singh ‘20, will participate on a panel and answer student questions about the law school admissions process.

The KHOP program has brought some very talented students to UC Davis School of Law, and many of them are now attorneys. After meeting this group of students, I am confident that they have bright futures ahead.
