Keeping in touch with the community

These are extraordinary times and, over the past few weeks, I have reached out to various parts of the King Hall community with my new favorite technological friend -- Zoom.

With the many challenges facing our law students, I decided it appropriate to have weekly Zoom town halls to update the student community on developments at the law school. Some of the topics that I discussed are "old news" now, such as the move to remote learning, the creation of a student emergency relief fund, and the postponement of Commencement 2020. There are, of course, many new developments on the horizon, such as whether the California bar examination set for July 2020 will be postponed, and developments in the employment market.

Earlier this week, I held a Zoom town hall with our amazing LL.M. students -- lawyers and judges who have come from around the world to study at UC Davis. I emphasized the law school's firm commitment and support for all of our students, even as we experience turmoil, and some people look for scapegoats for the pandemic. Unfortunately, many LL.M. students are worried for the health and safety of family members. Some have returned home and are learning remotely. Others cannot return home and are here for the duration.

At the end of the week, I held a town hall for the King Hall alumni. Many have been e-mailing me with questions and concerns about their law school. Our community has kept us moving forward, and we are fortunate to have that.
