On Aug. 28, I was honored with a joint resolution from California Senator Bill Dodd and Assembly Majority Leader Cecilia Aguiar-Curry. The resolution recognizes my three terms and 16 years of service as dean of UC Davis School of Law. I am proud of everything our school has accomplished, including our scholarly excellence, incredible faculty, groundbreaking Racial Justice Speaker Series, and overall focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion. I look forward to seeing how our school will continue to evolve.
I have had a wonderful time as dean of UC Davis School of Law for the last 16 years. Thanks to all of you for making it so special. As I return to the faculty, I look forward to seeing you around. Take good care.
The Aoki Center for Critical Race and Nation Studies welcomed new and returning students at a lunch in King Hall's Wilkins Moot Courtroom. We had a full house of law students hearing from the Aoki Center co-directors, Professor Raquel Aldana and me, as we provided background on Keith Aoki and the Aoki Center, its mission and goals.
King Hall is known for its distinguished immigration law scholars and curriculum, Immigration Law Clinic, Aoki Center for Critical Race and Nation Studies, and houses the UC Immigrant Legal Services Center. Go, King Hall!
On Friday, Sept. 6, CELPC will be sponsoring and hosting an all-day conference commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Clean Water Act. This conference will include a retrospective of the CWA’s first half-century; an assessment of current, key CWA issues and challenges; and predictions as to how the Act can and should evolve over its second 50 years.
Earlier this week, I spent an afternoon with our Schwartz/Levi Inn of Court members making dinner for 125 residents of Fourth and Hope, a shelter for the unhoused in Woodland, California. Among others helping prepare dinner was King Hall alum John Stoller ’12. The group served roasted chicken, a bountiful salad, fruit, and dessert.
On Sunday, Aug. 18, the New York Times highlighted a 2010 debate, held at UC Davis School of Law, that ignited Vice President and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris' political career. Watch a video of the debate here.
Established in 2001, the program is a unique initiative at UC Davis School of Law that helps college students from underrepresented communities prepare for the law school admissions process.
I am looking forward to seeing where the future will take these enthusiastic college students!
On Aug.14, I testified before the California Senate Judiciary Committee on a bill that would begin the process of building a memorial to the persons forcibly removed from the United States during the Mexican repatriation of the Great Depression.
King Hall alum Esmeralda Soria ’11 was on the committee I testified before. We had a mini-reunion afterward. She is also a former student of mine (and a student, who I recruited!). It is always wonderful to see former King Hall students thriving in the real world.
King Hall alum Scott Judson '12 is participating in an insightful webinar by the UC Davis Office of Planned Giving, during which participants will gain knowledge about estate planning and more. This virtual event will be on Tuesday, Aug. 27, from 12 - 1 p.m.
The Princeton Review has ranked UC Davis School of Law No. 3 in the nation for “most diverse faculty.”
The rankings appear in the Review’s just-released “Best Law Schools, 2024” rankings, which are based on a combination of institutional and student survey data, with factors including career outcomes, admissions selectivity and academic rigor considered.
Over the weekend I heard from sports fan and King Hall alum, Bill Mantle ’74. He attended a Conejo Oaks baseball game and saw Aggie player Nick Lehey in action!
Last week I had the opportunity to meet the 2024 King Hall Outreach Program (KHOP) Summer Session students. KHOP is a fantastic program that helps college students from underrepresented communities prepare for the law school admissions process.
I enjoyed speaking with the students and wish them success on their journey to law school. Some of them might even join us at King Hall!
