Young '02 attends World Economic Forum on Africa
Gwen K. Young '02 attended the World Economic Forum on Africa, held June 13-15, 2007, in Cape Town. Young works for the Agricultural Development Initiative in the Global Development Program for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. She recently coordinated the launch of The Alliance of a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), which is a dynamic partnership working across the African continent to help millions of small-scale farmers and their families lift themselves out of poverty and hunger.
At the World Economic Forum, former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan accepted the position of AGRA’s first chairman. He said that he was deeply honored to be taking up the position and hoped to used it to help drive forward progress on an issue critical to wider African development.
Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, the alliance will work throughout the continent on a wide range of interventions, ranging from strengthening local and regional agricultural markets, to helping improve irrigation, soil health, and training for farmers, to supporting the development of new seed systems better equipped to cope with the harsh African climate.
Young will work with AGRA and Secretary General Annan to promote the mission and goals of AGRA.
