Velastegui '82 Appointed Deputy Regional Attorney
In his new position, Velastegui will assist Regional Director Alan B. Reichard and Regional Attorney William A. Baudler in the enforcement and administration of the National Labor Relations Act in Region 32, which in California services Alameda, Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Fresno, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Mono, Monterey, San Benito, San Joaquin, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Stanislaus, Tulare and Tuolumne Counties; and in Nevada services Churchill, Douglas, Elko, Esmeralda, Eureka, Humboldt, Lander, Lyon, Mineral, Ormsby, Pershing, Storey, Washoe and White Counties.
The NLRB administers and enforces the National Labor Relations Act, the nation's primary labor law. It has two main functions: (1) to conduct secret-ballot elections in which employees vote on whether they want to be represented by a union for purposes of bargaining collectively with their employer about their wages, hours, and working conditions; and (2) to investigate, prosecute, and remedy unfair labor practices committed by private sector employers and unions.
Velastegui received a B.A. degree in Political Science from Whittier College in 1979 and a J.D. degree from UC Davis School of Law in 1982. He began his NLRB career as a field attorney in Region 32 in 1983.
