UC Davis School of Law Shines at AALS Annual Meeting

UC Davis School of Law faculty played a prominent role in the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) 2016 Annual Meeting held January 6-10 in New York City, presenting research, participating in panel discussions, and acting in leadership roles in various AALS sections. Attendees included Dean Kevin R. Johnson, Senior Associate Dean Madhavi Sunder, and Professors Afra Afsharipour, Anupam Chander, Gabriel "Jack" Chin, Angela Harris, Jasmine Harris, Thomas Joo, Carlton Larson, Brian Soucek, and Rose Cuison Villazor.

Presentations by UC Davis School of Law faculty included:

  • Dean Kevin R. Johnson spoke as part of a plenary session at the Workshop for Pretenured Faculty of Color, discussing "Service: Challenge, Opportunity and Passion" and "Teaching and Outsider Status."
  • Professor Afra Afsharipour moderated a discussion of "Transactional Lawyering and Contractual Innovation."
  • Professor Angela P. Harris presented research during a session titled "Animal Rights: From Why to How."
  • Professor Jasmine Harris presented at a panel titled "The ADA at 25: Implications for People with Mental Disabilities."
  • Professor Rose Cuison Villazor spoke as part of a panel discussion on "Indian Tribes, Same-Sex Marriage, and LGBT Families."

In addition, King Hall faculty were elected to leadership positions in AALS. Senior Associate Dean Hollis Kulwin, who was unable to attend due to illness, was elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the Section of Student Services. Professor Villazor was elected Chair of the Minority Groups Section. Professor Larson was elected to the Executive Committee of the Section on Legal History.  Professor Afsharipour held positions as Chair of the Transactional Law and Skills Section, as well as a member of the Executive Committee of the Law and South Asian Studies Section.

The School of Law also hosted a Friends and Alumni Reception on January 7 attended by numerous faculty and alumni including Jay Carlisle '69, Rob Smits '88, Monica Feltz '10, Rebecca Hayes '10, Maryam Sayyed '10, Michael Berens '07, and J.J. Mulligan '15, among others. Also attending the reception were former King Hall faculty members including Vikram Amar, now Dean at University of Illinois College of Law, and Angela Onwuachi-Willig, the Charles and Marion Kierscht Professor of Law at the University of Iowa.
