Regents Put Chill on Investment in Sudan
The Board of Regents voted last Thursday to tell UC foreign investments fund managers that it has strong concerns about university dollars being invested in companies with business ties to the Sudan government, which has been universally condemned for bearing responsibility in the rapes, killings and other abuses that have left over a million people homeless in the western region of Darfur.
Professor John B. Oakley and law student Adam Rosenthal '06 sit on the 26-member Board of Regents, which governs the University of California. Last November, Rosenthal made the motion to bring a plan to divest the university's holdings in companies engaged in significant business relationships that help make it possible for the Sudan government to continue acts of genocide in Darfur.
