Professor Jorjani Brainstorms Ways to Protect Minority Rights
Professor Raha Jorjani participated in a brainstorming session put on by the Applied Research Center, an organization that seeks to advance racial justice through advocacy, research, and journalism. The one-day strategy session, held on August 1, 2008 in Miami, Florida, focused on the intersecting aspects of criminal, immigration, and family law, bringing together advocates and experts from all three fields. The session explored opportunities for collaboration among those working in the three areas in order to better protect affected immigrant communities and people of color.
In a recent interview with COLORLINES, Jorjani noted that, for immigrants in the U.S., a criminal case can impact both their familial rights and their immigration status, having a domino effect of sorts.
Jorjani is an attorney with the UC Davis Immigration Law Clinic. Before joining the UC Davis staff, she spent time working in Arizona detention facilities, as well as with the Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project.
