Professor Hing Quoted in USA Today on Immigration Crackdown
Bill Ong Hing, a professor of law who specializes in immigration, was quoted in a USA Today article on immigrant activism in response to recent crackdowns on undocumented immigrants by local and federal authorities after the proposed congressional overhaul of the immigration system collapsed in June.
Hing said in the article that legal immigrants are participating in protests because some of their loved ones are here illegally. "The community is made up of a lot of mixed families," he said. "There might be 10-to-13 million undocumented immigrants in the United States. You can multiply that five or six times to determine the number of people it affects, because of relatives and employers and co-workers and friends. There are a lot of people frustrated that nothing was done (by Congress)."
Hing added that he hoped protests would have a noticeable impact but acknowledged that such tactics didn't always accomplish much. "If they are unified and have a very large boycott, it can be felt. That will catch people's attention," he said.
