Professor Hing Comments on Underrepresentation of Asians among Law Faculty
Professor Bill O. Hing commented on the underrepresentation of Asian Americans among law school faculty for a recent article in Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine. Asian Pacific Islanders make up about 8 percent of first-year law students nationwide, the article reports, yet only about 2.5 percent of the nation's full-time law professors.
"The truth is, the process of becoming a professor disfavors people who have dedicated themselves to community lawyering, civil rights, and interesting, important things in advocacy and practice," Professor Hing commented. "It's a shame. These lawyers could inspire many young people."
UC Davis School of Law has the highest number of Asian American faculty of any American law school, a recent article in National Jurist magazine reported.
Bill Hing, a professor at UC Davis School of Law, is recognized nationally as an immigration law and community lawyering expert. He is the founder of the Immigrant Legal Resource Center in San Francisco.
