Professor Cooper Comments on Immigration Detention for SF Chronicle
Professor Holly Cooper commented on the problems facing individuals in immigration detention for an article in the San Francisco Chronicle examining the case of Modesto man who spent months in custody before government officials accepted evidence showing that he is a U.S. citizen.
"If it's not clear whether you are an immigrant or a citizen, the system is set up to detain you," said Professor Cooper. "The default is, you are an alien, and then from a remote detention facility you have the burden to get documents, sometimes from people who are deceased."
Holly Cooper is a professor of law and serves as staff attorney at the UC Davis Immigration Law Clinic. Her areas of specialty include immigration law and detained immigrants' rights.
