Professor Buxbaum Elected to Top International Law Society

Hannah Buxbaum, the Martin Luther King Jr. Professor of Law, has been elected to the Institut de Droit International, a leading society that promotes the development of international law.

Buxbaum was elected to the Institute’s associate membership at its meeting in Rabat from Aug. 24–31. She is one of 132 worldwide members in the group, and one of eight members from the U.S. 

The Institute, established in Belgium in 1873, draws international lawyers from around the world to promote international law and peace. It received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1904 for encouraging international arbitration and promoting the peaceful settlement of disputes between states.

Hannah Buxbaum is a leading expert in international jurisdiction, international litigation, and comparative law. She joined UC Davis in 2025 from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, where she had been a faculty member since 1997. She served in a number of administrative leadership positions at Indiana University, including as the university’s Vice President for International Affairs (2018-2025) and as Interim Dean (2012-2014) and Executive Associate Dean (2009-2012) of the Maurer School of Law.
