Panel Discussion: Fair V. Rumsfeld, The Solomon Amendment, and Military Recruiting at UC Davis School Of Law

On March 6, the Supreme Court issued its opinion in FAIR v. Rumsfeld upholding the constitutionality of the Solomon Amendment, a federal statute that requires universities that accept federal funds to give military recruiters access to students equal to that provided to other recruiters. The decision ended several years of litigation by a coalition of law schools and law professors who sought to resist Solomon because of their opposition to the militarys discriminatory policy toward gay, lesbian and bisexual soldiers, the so-called Dont Ask, Dont Tell policy.

On Thursday, April 6, King Hall will host a panel discussion that will address the opinion, the litigation that challenged Solomon, and the issue of military recruiting on campus going forward. The panel participants will include King Hall professors Alan Brownstein and Tobias Barrington Wolff, and also Eric Grant, a Sacramento attorney, former clerk to Supreme Court Chief Justice Warren Burger, and former member of the Office of Legal Counsel under the first President Bush whose solo practice now focuses on constitutional litigation and complex statutory matters in the federal and California courts

The panel will be held in the Moot Court Room from 4:00 PM until approximately 6:00 PM on April 6, and a substantial portion of that time will be devoted to questions and discussion from the audience. All members of the King Hall community are welcome to attend.
