Michael Laurence '85 Featured in Sacramento Bee
Michael Laurence '85 is featured prominently in a recent Sacramento Bee article on capital punishment. Laurence is executive director of the Habeas Corpus Resource Center, where he leads a team of 30-plus lawyers responsible for re-investigating the cases of death row inmates and litigating their collateral appeals.
The article, written by Bee columnist Dan Morain, asserts that "when, not if, the death penalty is fully put out of its misery, Laurence will be among its chief executioners." Morain notes Laurence's work in serving as lead attorney for Ernest D. Jones, whose sentence was vacated on July 16 in "the latest case to upend capital punishment" as well as his efforts to end executions by lethal gas and other work related to capital punishment cases.
At King Hall, Laurence was Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review and edited a 615-page symposium on capital punishment.
