Luis Alejo '01 Receives State Award of Merit

Luis Alejo '01 has won the 2009 Award of Merit from the Legal Aid Association of California and Access to Justice Commission.  The King Hall graduate, who is a Monterey County Superior Court attorney and Watsonville Mayor Pro Tem, was recognized "for his exemplary work in improving access to justice as a member of the California Court system at the Monterey County Superior Court Self-Help Center."

Since 2007, Alejo has worked providing free legal assistance to thousands who cannot afford legal representation at the Monterey Courthouse in cases of family, civil and small claims cases.  A grandchild of migrant farmworkers, he was elected to the Watsonville City Council in November 2008 and was selected March 20 to serve as Mayor Pro Tem.
