Lawrence Brown '89, Acting US Attorney, Announces Major Drug Indictment

Lawrence G. Brown '89, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of California, was one of a team of law enforcement officials announcing the grand jury indictment of 21 individuals alleged to be involved in a wide-ranging heroin importation and distribution operation.  The case will be prosecuted by another King Hall graduate, Marlon Cobar '00, an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of California.

The indictment is the result of an investigation involving federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies that uncovered the trafficking of approximately 200 kilograms of heroin smuggled into the United States from Mexico.  The heroin is estimated to have a street value of $17.5 million.

"This investigation strikes a major blow against heroin trafficking in Northern California," Brown stated in a Department of Justice press release.  "Heroin is a highly addictive drug that destroys lives. The numerous local, state, and federal agencies who partnered during this 18-month operation are to be commended."
