Law Review's Stephanie Dong, Jessica Gillotte, Veronika Morrison receive Hopkins Awards

The annual Hopkins Reception honoring UC Davis Law Review editors and members could not take place this year because of the current public health crisis and stay-at-home orders. But the Patrick J. Hopkins Memorial Writing Awards -- usually given out at the ceremony -- have been announced. The recipients, all from the class of 2020, are:

• Stephanie Dong for her Note, “Court-Appointed Counsel for Unaccompanied Minors in Removal Proceedings-Looking to the European Union's Approach”;
• Jessica Gillotte for her Note, “Copyright Infringement in AI-Generated Artworks”; and 
• Veronika Morrison for her Note, "Airbnbs & Coastal Access: Can the California Coastal Commission Reject City Ordinances that Ban Short-Term Rentals?"

In his letter to the Law Review, faculty advisor and Professor Shayak Sarkar acknowledged the unusual circumstances surrounding this year’s awards, adding that “legal research addressing public health, including its racial and economic disparities; the design of criminal justice and the concerns of our incarcerated populations; and the dubious actions of large financial actors (examples of which you all published this year) are more pressing than ever.”
