Klafter '80 Appointed to Head Corporate Sustainability
Bruce Klafter '80 was recently appointed head of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability at Applied Materials, Inc. in Santa Clara, CA. In this role, Klafter is responsible for formulating Applied's sustainability strategies focusing upon such activities as greenhouse gas reduction, employee engagement, and external reporting.
Klafter joined Applied Materials in 2000 as a director in the Legal Services group and moved into operations in 2003 as head of the Environmental, Health and Safety organization.
Klafter is an active participant in a number of professional, industry, and public partnerships, including Sustainable Silicon Valley (member of Advisory Committee), the California Green Innovation Index Advisory Group (sponsored by Next Ten), the Silicon Valley Leadership Group’s Climate Change Subcommittee, the State Bar of California’s Environmental Section (past Chair, current Advisor and Chair of Climate Neutral committee) and the Association of Corporate Counsel (past Chair of National Environmental Committee). He is a frequent lecturer on a wide range of environmental topics.
Prior to joining Applied in August, 2000, Klafter was Chair of the Environmental Group at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP (a top 100 U.S. law firm) in San Francisco; Klafter joined Orrick in 1990.
Klafter began his career in 1980 as a Deputy Attorney General for the State of California. He received his J.D. from UC Davis School of Law and earned a B.S. magna cum laude in Urban and Environmental Planning (interdisciplinary) from Tufts University in 1976.
