King Hall Community Mourns Julie Wei ’08

Julie Wei ’08 has died. She was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, niece, granddaughter, colleague, and friend. She was a graduate of Lowell High, UCLA, and UC Davis School of Law. She was a San Francisco native, a UCLA Chi Alpha Delta sister, and an Associate in McGuireWoods' real estate practice group in Century City. 

In addition to serving her clients, Julie helped organize the Century City office's fundraising efforts for the Food from the Bar campaigns and devoted her time to pro bono work. She loved dogs, documentaries, international travel, fine whiskeys, the Giants, hiking, and scuba diving. She was a fashionista, a foodie, and most of all, a fiercely devoted and loyal friend.  

In early 2015, Wei was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), a relatively rare but aggressive oral cancer. She underwent surgeries to remove the tumor in her salivary gland. In 2016, she learned that the cancer had returned. Under the care of her oncology team, she underwent additional surgeries, chemotherapy, and other treatments to combat the disease, while continuing to work and travel the world. Beginning in September 2017, she devoted the time she had remaining to focusing on her health, family and friends.

Members of the King Hall community who were lucky enough to know her know that Julie Wei was kind, determined and tenacious, with a wicked sense of humor. She didn’t shy away from speaking her mind (or from anything for that matter). She fought cancer with poise, grace and dignity. Even in some of her toughest moments, she strapped on her fiercest pair of boots, and she found a way to laugh.  

On November 2, 2017, Julie Wei passed at home with her family by her side. She is survived by her mother, father, and her brothers Eric and Gary. Funeral services will be private. Memorial contributions can be made in Julie's honor to Planned Parenthood and/or SPCA.

Friends have created a public memorial site to honor Julie Wei’s life and memory in the hope that the site will let others know of her life and her courageous battle with cancer, and also provide an opportunity for those who would like to share memories or messages about her/to her.
