Judicial Profile: Bruce Chan '81
Commissioner Bruce Chan '81 was profiled in The Recorder on June 26, 2007. Chan was appointed to the San Francisco Superior Court on June 11, 2004.
Previously, Chan spent more than 15 years as a deputy public defender, five years as a lawyer for a legislative committee, and three years doing insurance defense work at the firm now called Ropers, Majeski, Kohn & Bentley.
Chan, a fourth-generation San Franciscan, says in the article that he learned the value of hard work when he took a job at his father's auto parts store in seventh or eighth grade. One of Chan's first assignments was taking inventory by hand of tailpipes, exhaust pipes, and other odd-shaped car parts.
"My father always made a point of telling us, if everybody else takes an hour lunch, you take a half hour. If everybody else gets in at 8:30, you get here at 8. And if you finish work early, pick up a broom, because there's always something else to do," he says.
Today, Chan draws flow charts on his computer in chambers to keep track of the positions parties take during discovery.
