International Alumni Update: Marcelo Moscogliato, Assistant Attorney General, Ministerio Publico Federal (Brazil)
What is your favorite thing about your current work?
I may help people a bit and speak for the victims.
How does your UC Davis School of Law education make you a more effective professional?
King Hall introduced me to the Common Law tradition and to the American legal way of thinking and solving problems. It was amazing and I started using the knowledge immediately in my cases in Brazil, first before the Appellate Federal Circuit Court in Sao Paulo and now before the Courts in Brasilia, the Brazilian Capital. I've got knowledge and tools to work with project finance, antitrust, commercial law, banking, international cooperation, and contracts, for instance. I learned to research and publish in law reviews. As a result, my final research and paper for the LL.M. was published: "Foreign Direct Investment in Corporations - Restrictions in the US and Brazil," in the Oregon International Law Review (Winter 2006, Vol. 9, N. 1).
What piece of advice would you give to this year's international law students?
Work hard. Take advantage of the libraries, computer labs, bookstores. Search and learn. The school is great! With 24-hour access, every day of the week, it is paradise for curious people. The professors are the best, and they know how to teach you, how to guide you and, believe me, they don't waste opportunities to be in touch, to question, to chat, to help. Enjoy Davis and its "world-famous blue bikes." The community is friendly and they like to talk and get information from students.
What is your favorite UC Davis memory?
There are so many: wonderful classes, the 24/7 library (and computer lab), students all around, jokes and chats with professors and colleagues. My first sunny day at school was memorable, finding people from so many different parts of the world. Many of them remain my friends to this day.
