Immigration Law Clinic Students Win Client's Release

UC Davis School of Law Immigration Law Clinic students and former students Jimmy Newman '14, David Jefferson '14, Mai Sartawi '15, and Courtney Lafranchi '16 recently won an impressive victory on behalf of a client who was imprisoned for 26 years on a drug-related conviction. Newman and Jefferson succeeded in obtaining a remand from the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, sending his case back to immigration court, where Sartawi and Lafranchi won a 212(c) waiver for his conviction. The client was released from custody in late November and expressed his desire to attend the Swearing-In Ceremony at King Hall on December 5 to watch some of his former advocates become lawyers.
