Controversy Over Surveillance Cameras
Professor Jennifer Chacon and Jeffrey Kravitz '96 were interviewed on KOVR 13 News on May 10, about the Sacramento police department's proposal to install surveillance cameras in public places that feed into a centralized monitoring station. Chacon, a specialist in criminal procedure, criminal law, and immigration law, pointed out concerns that racial profiling may come into play, especially if certain neighborhoods are targeted. Kravitz, a civil rights attorney and candidate for California's Fifth Congressional District in Sacramento, said that when citizens walk public streets they are not constitutionally entitled to privacy, but being watched makes people uncomfortable even if they're not planning to do anything wrong.
