Conflict in Iraq: Hussein Trial
Professor Diane Marie Amann was quoted in The Los Angeles Times on the recent killing of a second defense lawyer in the trial of Saddam Hussein and seven co-defendants. The slayings have raised questions over security for defense attorneys in the trial.
Amann, an international law expert, pointed out that it was understandable that the defense attorney had refused the additional security that protects the prosecutors and judges in the case. They need to operate independently from and without owing favors to the government that is trying to prosecute their client, she said. It has become impossible for the tribunal to protect them.
