Cobar '00 Honored for Distinguished Service in Iraq
Marlon Cobar '00 was awarded the U.S. Army Commander's Award for Civilian Service in recognition for his distinguished service as a resident legal advisor with the Kirkuk Provincial Reconstruction Team in Iraq from 2006 to 2007. As head of the Rule of Law team, Cobar was responsible for leading initiatives in judicial security, terrorist and insurgent case processing, and Iraqi security forces training. Cobar, previously an assistant U.S. attorney, was one of only eight legal advisers sent from the Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance, and Training, an organization within the Department of Justice that assists in the coordination of training judges and prosecutors abroad. On receiving the award, Cobar said, "Much more than commending me, the medal speaks highly of the critical and respected leadership role that the Department of Justice has collectively brought to the Iraq provincial rule of law mission among its military, coalition, and Iraqi partners."
