Challenging "In God We Trust"

Professor Alan E. Brownstein, a constitutional expert, commented in the Sacramento Bee on a lawsuit expected to be filed by Michael Newdow in the U.S. District Court of Sacramento this week, challenging the national motto, In God We Trust, placed on U.S. money.

Michael Newdow is most famous for his lawsuit challenging the words "Under God" in the National Pledge. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that the phrase violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, but that decision was later overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court on procedural grounds.

The courts tend to view certain expressions like the national motto as casual religious references that have been around so long they've lost religious power, Brownstein said in the article. [It] is not something that most people look at and even associate as being religious.
