Atlantic Quotes Professor Elmendorf About Mamdani's New York 'Rent Freeze' Proposal

Professor Christopher Elmendorf was quoted in a Nov. 2 article in the Atlantic, "Mamdani Has a Point About Rent Control." The story explores the controversial housing proposal of New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. The plan, among other things, calls to "freeze the rent" to make housing more affordable for residents.

The article covers the results of a survey Elmendorf, and his co-authors, did in 2024 to measure what housing policy changes resonated with 5,000 voters across the country. They were surprised to find that anywhere from 75 to 85 percent of voters supported rent control.

Elmendorf told the Atlantic that rent control is, "one of the most important issues in state politics today."
