Alumni Scholarships Awarded

During the Class of 2007 Celebration, held April 26, 2007, in the King Hall Courtyard, a number of graduating students were honored with scholarships and awards.

Dean Rex Perschbacher welcomed the students to the celebration barbecue, which was hosted by the Law School and the School of Law Alumni Association. "I hope you will take this time and some time this summer to acknowledge the achievement that is about to be conferred upon you. Receiving a J.D. degree is an exceptional accomplishment," he said. "I know each and every one of you will be great lawyers—lawyers with conscience, drive, and the educational backing to make a difference in both your public and private endeavors. Congratulations to you all!"

Each year, the School of Law Alumni Association honors a student with an alumni association scholarship. This year, due to the outstanding achievements of all 16 applicants, the award committee decided to honor three recipients with the 2007 Margaret and Frank Johns Alumni Association Scholarship Award.

Steve Boutin '72, board member of the Alumni Association and chairman of the student outreach committee, and Laura Warner '06, last year's scholarship winner, introduced this year's recipients: Megan Lane, Nick Lieberknecht, and Austin Quinn-Davidson. (Note: excerpts from Laura Warner’s speech on each award recipient is reprinted below.)

Due to the generosity of alumni, this year’s scholarship fund was increased to $7,500 or $2,500 for each recipient. Dean Perschbacher thanked alumni for their contributions, as well as the Alumni Association Scholarship Committee: Committee Chair Steve Boutin '72, Kara Ueda '00, Adrienne Meredith '04, Matt Post '05, Kelly Borelli '92, Jason Cooksey '00, and Laura Warner ’06.

The following are excerpts from Laura Warner's speech introducing the three 2007 Margaret and Frank Johns Alumni Association Scholarship Award.

Megan Lane

During Megan’s time at King Hall, she has been active in a wide variety of programs, including a leader and advocate for the Business Law Journal, a member of the Moot Court Board, a legal writing teaching assistant, and an active member of the Federalist Society who worked to benefit the King Hall community by presenting an important dialogue of diverse opinions to campus.

Megan is headed to Montana to clerk for a year and looks forward to exposing the Montana Legal community to the education and experience King Hall provides its graduates.

Nick Lieberknecht

The Scholarship Committee was very impressed with Nick's enthusiasm and genuine excitement for King Hall.  To demonstrate this, I would like to read a portion of his application:

"King Hall has the greatest students, the most caring faculty and supportive alumni. Community is nothing more than potential unless dedicated individuals facilitate those people coming together. So whenever I've been asked the question at King Hall, 'Will you?' I made it a point to say, 'Yes.' I said, 'Yes' to helping with admitted student days, phoning prospective students and allowing students to shadow me to class. I said, 'Yes' to volunteering and helping organize the Dr. Ives Alumni basketball tournament.  I'm not only involved when I’m leading, but seek out the opportunity to follow my fellow students when they have worked to plan an event. I've danced at Patiño, interacted during Symposia and played softball and bowled for three years. I love King Hall. I love the students and faculty at King Hall.  I will cherish the time I spent here forever."

Austin Quinn-Davidson

Like many members of the Class of 2007, Austin was actively involved in a wide variety of programs, including Moot Court Competitions, a tutor for first-year students, an executive editor for ENVIRONS - the Environmental Law Journal, a participant in the Civil Rights Clinic, and an officer in the Environmental Law Society, the American Constitution Society, and the Agricultural Law Society.

Austin especially impressed the committee when she stated "I believe my biggest contribution has been through my everyday interactions with fellow King Hall students. I have met with various students to help them prepare their class schedules and search for jobs. I have maintained relationships with past employers and have helped current 1 and 2Ls obtain employment at these same organizations."

I believe that these are the very qualities that keep the very special spirit of the King Hall community alive.
