Alumna Named First Female Minority President of SF Bar

Joan M. Haratani '84 is The Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF) 2006 President. Haratani, a litigation partner at the San Francisco law firm of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, is the bar's first female minority president. Ms. Haratani is Asian American. Installed at BASF's annual luncheon in December, Haratani spoke about four initiatives that she hopes to bring to the forefront during her one-year term. The first is implementing BASF's diversity best practices, as established by BASF's award winning Goals and Timetables for Minority Hiring and Advancement. The second is the Working Parent's Initiative, where a BASF task force will study whether parents and other caregivers are vulnerable at certain career stages and identify how they can be retained by local law firms. The third initiative is putting a face to the homeless by highlighting stories of homeless people in BASF publications, including its magazine, San Francisco Attorney and its Web site.
