2007 Distinguished Teaching Award Nominations Due

Nominations for the 2007 Distinguished Teaching Award (DTA) are due by Friday, January 19, 2007. UC Davis School of Law students, graduates, and faculty members may nominate teaching candidates for the award. The award is open to all Davis Law School faculty teaching during the 2006-2007 academic year, including professors, acting professors, and lecturers. Previous winners of the award are eligible.

The DTA was first established in 1980, through the generous support of Bill and Sally Rutter. This will be the 28th year in which we have been able to present one of our faculty with a cash award, currently $7,500, in recognition of her or his excellent teaching. Mr. and Mrs. Rutter's intention for the award is "to honor those law teachers who give stellar performances in the classroom--and who, as a result, usually find themselves burdened with larger classes, more exams to grade, and demands on their time for participation in student and extra-curricular activities."

The 2007 Award recipient will be honored at the annual Distinguished Teaching Award/Donor Recognition Dinner to be held Friday, March 16, from 6:00 -9:00 p.m. at the ARC Ballroom.

Eligibility: The award is open to all King Hall faculty teaching during the 2006-2007 academic year, including professors, acting professors, and lecturers. Previous winners of the award are eligible.

Selection Process: Any Law School student, graduate, or faculty member may nominate candidates for the award. Pursuant to the procedures established by Mr. and Mrs. Rutter, the selection committee consists of the recipient of last year's award, Professor Edward J. Imwinkelried; an alumnus, and a third-year student. The selection will be made solely on the basis of teaching excellence. In making the selection, the Committee will bear in mind that excellence in teaching manifests itself in many ways; it is not possible to specify a clear, single set of criteria that would, in all cases, signify teaching excellence. The Committee will, however, consider the following factors:
  • Teaching effectiveness
  • Command of the subject matter
  • Ability to stimulate thought and involvement of the students
  • Enthusiasm for teaching
  • Quality of course content, including organization and integration of lectures, readings, and assignments
  • Teaching outside the classroom by assisting moot court and trial practice teams and advising student organizations
  • Concern for improving teaching
  • Mentoring and advising students
Nominations: Nominations to the Committee should be on the attached form. You should also include special characteristics that set the nominee apart as an excellent teacher. If you wish, brief supporting materials may accompany the form. The supporting materials may include the following:
  • A small number of supporting letters from students, graduates, faculty and colleagues
  • A summary of student teaching evaluations
  • Examples of teaching materials, including course syllabi and handouts
  • Casebooks created by the nominee
  • Publications relating to teaching
  • Honors and awards relating to teaching
THE DEANS OFFICE MUST RECEIVE NOMINATIONS NO LATER THAN 5:00 P.M., FRIDAY, JANUARY 19, 2007.
