'Marketplace' Interviews Professor Afsharipour About Megadeals Trend

Professor Afra Afsharipour was interviewed on Marketplace for an Oct. 14 segment, "Megadeals have driven most merger and acquisition activity this year." Afsharipour discussed how megadeals, with values higher than $10 billion, often trigger international regulatory scrutiny. But, these deals usually sit with large companies equipped to navigate regulatory complexities outside of one jurisdiction.

On the other hand, Afsharipour said this year's big M&A transactions will take a toll on smaller companies.

"If you're a midsize business in a particular sector, and then your largest competitors are 10, 15 times larger than you, your ability to compete is going to be really tough," she said.

John D. Ayer Professor of Law Afra Afsharipour’s areas of research include corporate law and governance, mergers and acquisitions, transactional law, and the legal profession. From 2018-2024, she served as Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Her scholarship has appeared in the Columbia Law Review, University of Chicago Law Review, Minnesota Law Review, Vanderbilt Law Review, and UC Davis Law Review, among other leading publications.
