Hawaii Supreme Court Cites Professor Joslin

The Hawaii Supreme Court cited Professor Courtney Joslin in its decision in JK v. HKThe decision held that a woman was a legal parent to a child born to her former same-sex partner and for whom she had jointly planned and cared.

In reaching that conclusion, the court interpreted and applied the Uniform Parentage Act, relying on Joslin’s 2017 article “Preface to the UPA,” which described the 2017 amendments to, and history of, the act. Joslin was the reporter for the 2017 version of the act.

Professor Joslin is a leading scholar in the field of family and relationship recognition, with a particular focus on same-sex and non-marital couples. She is a two-time Dukeminier Award recipient and the 2023 recipient of UC Davis Law’s Distinguished Teaching Award.
