Celebrating King Hall Recognizes Distinguished Teacher, Alumna of the Year
The end of the academic year is coming and UC Davis School of Law is seeing wonderful event after wonderful event. Last week, we had one of our signature events -- "Celebrating King Hall." It was a time to revel in our warm and inspirational community and the highlights of the best events of the year. Introduced by legendary teacher Professor Emeritus Joel Dobris, Professor Carlton Larson was honored with the Distinguished Teaching Award. Professor Larson spoke sincerely about the faculty's commitment to teaching and how wonderful it is to work with our amazing students.
Kim Lucia '09, Alumni Board President, introduced the Alumna of the Year, Sister Simone Campbell '77. Sister Simone helped bring about a mini-reunion of Class of 1977, including Tricia Nemec Ashbaugh, Suzy Underwood, Allen Johnson, Priscilla Winslow, Charity Kenyon, Marilyn McCloskey and Kathleen Gnekow . Sister Simone is executive director of NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice in Washington, D.C. Campbell, who joined the Sisters of Social Service in 1964, had a long history of social activism before she became a national celebrity in 2010 following the publication of the “Nuns’ Letter,” which she wrote in support of the Affordable Care Act. At the event, Sister Simone offered an inspirational talk about how we all should do our part to participate in our democracy.
We also honored our dedicated group of supporters, who last year gave more than $4 million to the law school. Law student Janaki Jagannath '20 spoke eloquently from the heart about how the Dean's Merit Scholarship and William and Inez Mabie Scholarship made her legal education possible.
Many King Hall alums were in attendance, including Steve Boutin '72, Judge Michael Garcia '74, Al Balingit ’75, Toso Himel ’75, Iris Yang '82, and Kara Ueda ’00. It was an elegant and warm evening and reminded our community just how special King Hall is.
