Last week, I had the pleasure of being the guest speaker at a virtual meeting of the UC Davis La Raza Pre-Law Students Association. These undergraduates are interested in attending law school and careers in the law. It was great sharing my career path, discussing law school, and talking about our amazing UC Davis School of Law. The precocious students asked great questions. I hope to see them all at King Hall someday.
Julia Mendoza ’08 is an Associate Professor of Law at Loyola Law School, Los Angeles, where she brings an interdisciplinary lens to criminal law and education. Professor Mendoza’s book, The Miseducation of the Barrio: The School to Prison Pipeline in Stockton, California (under contract with Stanford University Press), focuses on the experience of Stockton’s Black and Latinx students to explore the historical connection between school desegregation and the school-to-prison pipeline.

As 2022/23 comes to a close, we celebrate the amazing achievements and enduring collaborative spirit of our law school community. First and foremost, congratulations 2023 J.D. and LL.M. graduates! We are honored that the Chief Justice of California, Patricia Guerrero, will deliver the keynote address at commencement on May 13. Professor Irene Joe and Ariya Haghighat ’23 also will speak. Professors Karrigan Börk and Peter Lee are faculty marshals.
We are all trying to process the news that UC Davis student Karim Abou Najm was killed on Saturday night.
This senseless death follows the fatal attack on a long-standing Davis community member, David Henry Breaux, earlier this week. Tragedies like these shake the core of our campus, but our strong community will carry us through these challenging times.
It was wonderful to see such a great turnout of students, faculty and staff at this year's End-of-Semester Celebration on Tuesday. The community enjoyed cold treats from the shaved ice truck and good company.

The Business Law Journal hosted the last conference of the UC Davis School of Law academic year. The conference focused on innovation and technology.
The morning panel included Senior Associate Dean Afra Afsharipour as moderator and alum John McKinsey ‘99, an energy law expert and teacher at King Hall.
On the afternoon panel, Faustino Abad ‘05, a senior corporate counsel, talked about privacy issues.
Years ago, John and Faustino were great students in my civil procedure class. And, I also worked with panelist Monique Ho ’99 when she was a student.
