Eligibility

Winston & Strawn’s 1L Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) Scholars program is a unique opportunity for selected 1L law students to gain early experience working with world-class attorneys while developing strong mentoring relationships.

LCLD Scholars at Winston have an opportunity to attend the LCLD Scholars Summit, participate in the firm’s annual Diversity Roundtable, and spend part of the summer working directly with one of our clients.

1L LCLD PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Challenging work experience on complex disputes and transactions
  • Working directly with one of Winston’s clients for part of the summer
  • Participating in Winston’s LCLD 1L Scholars Roundtable hosted by the firm’s D&I Committee
  • Compensation based on the first-year associate annual salary of $215,000
  • Potential to receive a $50,000 scholarship if you complete both our 1L and 2L summer associate programs and accept an offer of full-time employment

In 2023, Winston’s LCLD Scholars gained valuable client-side experience at Abbott, Accenture, Bank of America, Cisco, Comcast Corporation, Fresh Del Monte, Royal Caribbean, U.S. Bank, Vistra Energy, and VMWare.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Applicants of all races, ethnicities, genders, disabilities, orientations, and socio-economic or other backgrounds are eligible to apply for Winston’s LCLD 1L Scholars Program. Our selection criteria for the program include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Interest in practicing law after graduation in one of our U.S. offices
  • A record of excellent academic achievement, as reflected in undergraduate and law school transcripts
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting the Firm’s values of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the community during college, law school or otherwise
  • Ability to bring a unique perspective to the Firm based on an applicant’s experiences as an individual, including the challenges overcome, skills built, or lessons learned that have shaped the applicant’s identity
  • A personal statement 
Award
