UCOP Commits State Funds to King Hall Building Project

UC Davis School of Law received some great news in June when the UC Office of the President acted to allocate the remaining state general funds needed for the King Hall building project.  With the state portion of construction funding in place, the Law School can continue raising private funds toward the $8 million building campaign goal in confidence that the project will be completed on schedule, with King Hall's new east wing set for occupancy in May 2010.

After California's fiscal problems forced a brief construction hiatus early this year, the state in April successfully sold "Build America Bonds" authorized by the federal Recovery Act.  The bond sale allowed the state to resume funding previously frozen capital projects, including the King Hall Expansion and Renovation.  The Law School's allocation is especially gratifying because the University of California system received only a small portion, $165 million, of the $1.34 billion required to fulfill outstanding state-funded capital projects on all UC campuses.

Each phase of the building project draws upon state and university as well as private support.  The commitment of state funding is a vital step in ensuring that the construction and renovation will proceed on schedule, but the Law School still must raise roughly $3 million toward the $8 million campaign goal in order to realize the full potential of the project.

"We look forward to a busy summer of construction, with the decking of the new wing's floors and the foundation for a new elevator taking shape in the weeks ahead," said Dean Kevin R. Johnson.  "Thank you for your patience and support as we build an even greater King Hall."
