UC Regents Approve King Hall Expansion and Renovation

On November 14, the UC Regents Committee on Grounds and Buildings approved by unanimous vote the King Hall expansion and renovation project. This vote represents the final Regental approval needed for the building project to proceed.  Construction is expected to begin in late 2007 or early 2008 and end in late 2009 or early 2010.

The King Hall project includes the addition of approximately 19,000 square feet of new assignable space and the renovation of approximately 25,000 square feet of existing assignable space to alleviate overcrowding, expand student study and meeting space, add faculty and visitor offices, add seminar and teaching spaces, consolidate the law library and add a reading room and stack space, and consolidate student services in King Hall. The addition and renovation will also improve circulation throughout the building, bring more air and light to the building, make the courtyard an integral part of the overall building, and give the School a prominent address at the main campus entry point. The law school's faculty, course offerings, and skills classes have all increased by over 100% since King Hall was completed in 1968.

The $30 million expansion and renovation project will be funded with $17.9 million from Proposition 1D and $3.9 million in campus funds. The law school also hopes to raise up to $8 million in donations. Just under $3 million has already been contributed.
