UC Davis Library to Celebrate Justice Reynoso's Legacy on May 26

On Thursday, May 26, the UC Davis Library, along with the Department of History and Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, will host an event at Shields Library celebrating the legacy of the late Justice and UC Davis Law Professor Emeritus Cruz Reynoso.

The event, “Democracy by Participation: The Life and Legacy of Cruz Reynoso,” will honor Reynoso, who died in 2021 at age 90. Born into a farmworker family, Reynoso spent a lifetime championing the rights of marginalized communities – as a lawyer, professor and the first Latino California Supreme Court justice. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the UC Davis Medal.

Speakers at the event will include members of Reynoso family, and students who curated a companion exhibit in the Shields Library lobby that draws from the UC Davis Library’s collection about Justice Reynoso.
