UC Davis Law Review Prop. 187 symposium available online

The UC Davis Law Review symposium “The 25th Anniversary of Proposition 187: Challenges and Opportunities for Immigrant Integration and Political Identity in California” has been published online.

Organized by Professor Leticia Saucedo and Law Review editors Alice Park ’20 and Rebecca Brandel ’20, the live November 2019 symposium drew scholars, attorneys and policy experts to King Hall. They discussed the legacy of Prop. 187, an initiative passed by California voters in 1994 that sought to strip undocumented immigrants of public benefits, including a public education. Blocked by an injunction and later invalidated, Prop. 187 never went into effect but helped lead the way for anti-sanctuary laws adopted in several other states.

The online symposium includes an article by UC Davis Law Dean Kevin R. Johnson, “Proposition 187 and Its Political Aftermath: Lessons for U.S. Immigration Politics After Trump.” It also contains contributions from law Professors Rachel Moran of UC Irvine; Huyen Pham of Texas A&M;  Rick Su of University of North Carolina; and Rose Cuison Villazor of Rutgers (and formerly of UC Davis Law). Thomas A. Saenz, president and general counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, also contributed.
