Supreme Court Upholds Strict Deportation Law

Professor of Law Jennifer Chacon was quoted in the Los Angeles Times on a Supreme Court ruling which upholds a strict deportation law that subjects illegal immigrants to policies passed after arrival. The 8-1 decision on June 22, 2006, upholds a 1996 law that adopted a no-leniency policy for those who returned illegally to this country after having been deported, and therefore, are subject to automatic removal even if they have lived here more than 20 years and have jobs and families. Chacon said the ruling highlights an unfairness in the law. This concerns the people we should be the least concerned about. They are stable people with jobs: grandparents, parents, husbands, she said. These people are not security threats.
