School of Law Delegation Visits China
Dean Rex Perschbacher, Professor Dan Simmons, and Executive Director of International Programs Beth Greenwood recently traveled to Beijing, China to set up faculty and student exchanges and to explore other cooperative program activities between the UC Davis School of Law and the School of Law at the China University of Political Science and Law. During the December visit, Dean Perschbacher and Dean Xue Gang Ling signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to foster faculty and student exchanges between the law schools.
In addition to the exchanges, Professor Dan Simmons, Graduate Group Chair for the LL.M. in International Commercial Law, and Director Beth Greenwood discussed a faculty partnership and possible joint classes in International Commercial Law at the China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing. A new program in law firm management was also included in the dialogue.
While at the university, the UC Davis delegation met with Vice Presidents Yong and Zhang, Vice Deans Liu, Wang, and Ling, and numerous faculty members. Dean Perschbacher presented a two-hour lecture on Legal Ethics to faculty members and graduate students from the School of Law. While in Beijing, the delegation also visited the three China University of Political Science and Law campuses--the graduate school at the Haidian campus, the undergraduate school in Changping, and the newly created Institute of Forensic Science facility in outer Beijing.
Several UC Davis School of Law faculty members have ties to and/or have visited the China University of Political Science and Law, including Professors Bob Hillman, Floyd Feeney, Ed Imwinkelried, and Andrea Bjorklund.
Dean Perschbacher said, "China is a major economic and political force in today's world. Our special relationship with the China University of Political Science and Law, School of Law in Beijing, a premier law school in China, will foster an understanding between the legal systems of our two countries. We are excited about the prospect of deepening our ties with this important Chinese legal institution and creating additional opportunities for our students and faculty members."
According to Professor Dan Simmons, "This trip hopefully opened the door for students and faculty members to participate in programs in Beijing."
The China University of Political Science and Law is the largest law school in the world with over 20,000 students and 700 faculty members. It was established more than 50 years ago when the Chinese government combined the law schools at Peking University and several other prominent universities in Beijing. The China University of Political Science and Law is closely connected with the Ministry of Education. Like the UC Davis School of Law, many of the China University of Political Science and Law students work in government, the judiciary, or major law firms in Beijing.
