Reynoso Receives ABA Kutak Award
Professor of Law Emeritus Cruz Reynoso was presented the American Bar Association's Robert J. Kutak Award on Friday, August 10, 2007, at a special award ceremony and reception. The Kutak Award was established in 1984 by the Section of Legal Education & Admissions to the Bar and the national Kutak Rock Law Firm in memory of a distinguished Omaha lawyer, champion of legal reform, and advocate for legal education. It is presented annually by the Section's Council to an individual who meets the highest standard of professional responsibility and demonstrates substantial achievement toward increased understanding between legal education and the active practice of law. The Award is one of the most prestigious given by the Association.
Cruz Reynoso is nationally and internationally recognized for his leadership in civil rights, immigration and refugee law and policy, government reform, the administration of justice, legal services for the indigent, and education. He was a justice on the Third District Court of Appeal for California from 1976 to 1982 and as an associate justice of the California Supreme Court from 1982 to 1987.
Reynoso has served on numerous federal, state, and professional boards and commissions concerned with civil rights and the administration of justice, including the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, where he served as vice chair from 1994 to 2004.
In 2000, President Clinton awarded Reynoso with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country's highest civilian honor, for his lifelong devotion to public service. Reynoso has also been honored with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation's Hispanic Heritage Award in Education and the American Bar Association's Spirit of Excellence Award.
Before joining the UC Davis School of Law faculty in 2001, Reynoso was a professor of law at UCLA for ten years. At Davis School of Law, he was the first holder of the Boochever and Bird Chair for the Study and Teaching of Freedom and Equality.
