Reversal by Ninth Circuit supports Nevada appellant backed by Aoki Center

On Feb. 24, the en banc U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit reversed a district court’s judgment in Ross v. Williams. The district court had dismissed as untimely Ronald Ross’ amended habeas corpus petition challenging his Nevada state conviction for theft-related offenses. A divided panel affirmed, but the court granted rehearing en banc.

UC Davis School of Law’s Aoki Center for Critical Race and Nation Studies and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers had filed an amici brief in support of rehearing in Ross, with Professor Gabriel “Jack” Chin and David M. Porter ’86 acting as counsel for the Aoki Center and  NACDL. Students and alumni on the brief included Samantha Castanien '19, David Fox '19, Chris Stansell '19, Evan Reid '20, August Wissmath '20, and Jie Yu, LL.M. '20.
