Professor Ziegler Talks to N.Y. Times About Abortion Opponents' 'Fetal Personhood' Push

Professor Mary Ziegler spoke to the New York Times for an Aug. 21 story about anti-abortion activists’ push for so-called “fetal personhood” laws that grant fetuses the same legal rights and protections as any person.

“Personhood has always been the ultimate ambition of the anti-abortion movement,” Ziegler told the Times.

Mary Ziegler is an expert on the law, history, and politics of reproduction, health care, and conservatism in the United States from 1945 to the present. She is one of the world’s leading historians of the U.S. abortion debate. Her book Dollars for Life: The Anti-Abortion Movement and the Fall of the Republican Establishment (Yale University Press) was released in June.
