Professor West Marks Retirement by Establishing a Social Justice Scholarship

Professor of Law Marty West has chosen to mark her retirement by endowing a scholarship fund for future law students dedicated to social justice issues.  Mark Askanas '85, Linda McAtee '85, Wayne Bartholomew '71, Angela E. Oh '86, Gage Dungy '03, Joan Haratani '84, Felicia Reid '91, Carolyn Langenkamp '79, Darrell Steinberg '84, and Jason Rabinowitz '96 are aiding her in this endeavor.

West's decision to set up a scholarship fund is one way to express her appreciation for the many law students who have inspired her over the years.  She has also expressed concern about the increases in Law School tuition and fees over the past four years, doubling from $12,000 per year in 2002-03 to $24,500 in 2006-07, "Such high costs discourage students interested in social justice from seeking a UC Davis legal education."

The goal of $100,000 has been set for the Martha West Social Justice Scholarship Fund. Over $95,000 has been donated to date, and the organizers hope the community will contribute to support this cause.

A celebration reception was held on May 17, 2007, in honor of Professor West. For information about the event or the scholarship, please contact Jean Flournoy Korinke at 530-752-1067 or [email protected].
