Professor West Comments on Senate Sexual Harassment Settlement for KCRA-3

Professor Martha S. West commented for KCRA-3 on the California Senate leaders' secret approval of a $120,000 settlement in a sexual harassment claim.  Professor West remarked on problems associated with confidential settlements.

"What bothers me most is the fact that protecting the confidentiality of harassers allows them to harass again," she said.  "Also, requiring women to sign confidentiality agreements as a condition of settlement discourages women from telling people about what happened to them, and women have every right in the world to voluntarily tell their stories.

Professor West taught courses on Employment Discrimination, Labor Law, and Sex-based Discrimination at UC Davis School of Law. Her research has focused on discrimination against women faculty in higher education.
