Professor Villazor Writes on State Citizenship Bill for New York Times
Professor Rose Cuison Villazor has published an entry in "Room for Debate," a feature of the New York Times website.
Villazor's essay appears as part of a group of articles on the topic of a bill that would grant state citizenship to non-U.S. citizen residents of New York. She outlines the legal rights that historically have been granted to noncitizens, and the possible benefits of state citizenship. The New York bill "should be lauded," she writes, because it "seeks to fix a democratic deficit" in enabling noncitizens to have greater opportunities to participate in state and local government, and "help integrate noncitizens into the larger American polity."
Professor Rose Cuison Villazor joined the UC Davis faculty in 2012 from the Maurice A. Deane Law School at Hofstra University. She has also taught at Columbia Law School and the Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law. Professor Villazor teaches and writes in the areas of property law, immigration law, race, and citizenship.
