Professor Villazor Comments for National Law Journal on Law Professor’s Blackface Costume

Professor Rose Cuison Villazor commented for the National Law Journal on the controversy that has erupted after a white University of Oregon School of Law professor wore blackface to an off-campus Halloween party attended by some faculty and students.  Some colleagues have called for the professor’s dismissal.

“I wouldn’t have expected a law professor to do something like this,” Villazor said. “There’s a code of civility and common decency that all people should abide by, and certainly a law professor. I consider my job a privilege because I’m able to model to my students how we should treat other people.”

Professor Rose Cuison Villazor joined the UC Davis faculty in 2012 from the Maurice A. Deane Law School at Hofstra University.  She has also taught at Columbia Law School and the Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law.  Professor Villazor teaches and writes in the areas of property law, immigration law, race, and citizenship.
