Professor Ventry Discusses Mortgage Deduction on NPR, in Canadian News
Professor Dennis J. Ventry, Jr., discussed the home mortgage interest tax deduction in an interview on National Public Radio's All Things Considered. The program, which aired November 22, included Professor Ventry's comments on tax credits for first-time homeowners as well as the mortgage interest deduction, which Ventry argues does not achieve the goal of increasing home ownership but merely functions to inflate property values. Professor Ventry has recently published a paper, "The Accidental Deduction: A History and Critique of the Tax Subsidy for Mortgage Interest," on the subject. On November 20, Canada's Financial Post also spotlighted Professor Ventry's paper in the story,"Why U.S. mortgage interest deductibility won't come to Canada." The story was reprinted on several of Canada's top news websites, including Canada.com.
